BOXES FOR KATJE

In post WWII Holland, Young Katje is ecstatic when the postman delivers a package to her. Amidst overwhelming concern for food and clothing, the simple contents of the Children's Aid Society box delight Katje and her family. The thank-you note that Katje writes begins a correspondence and a relief effort that exemplifies all that is good in families and communities. Christina Moore's deliberate narration brings import to this story inspired by an event in the author's own family. As Moore reads the correspondence between Katje and Rosie, the glimpses into the events initiated by the notes and boxes are childlike and heartwarming. As Postman Kleinhoonte, Moore adds sparkle.
