Kitty Hendrix narrates this debut audiobook. On Gwen Franklin's first day of retirement from teaching, she and her over-the-top BFF, Nora Goldstein, start a pet business and then find Nora's neighbor dead in her kitchen. The plot moves steadily, while the narration is leisurely but deliberate. Little attention is devoted to solving the mystery at hand, and the main characters are not particularly likable. Are they a little spunky--or outright bullies? It's hard to distinguish. Hendrix, however, truly shines at capturing each character's quirky personality, and the subtle differences in their voices make it easy to follow along. Despite some glaring plot inconsistencies, it's nice to encounter some senior-aged protagonists. E.P. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2020]
