This audiobook is enhanced greatly by its animated narration. Ella Turenne crafts voices for a makeshift family of money launderers. They all battle their own demons, and when a runner is killed and the tension in the plot increases, listeners can hear the amped up anxiety in the characters. Uncle Shecky has a thick, consistent Brooklyn accent, while his partner in crime has an Eastern European intonation. The other associates who are part of the criminal enterprise take on varied tones and pitches. One manipulative, commanding girl--Lipz--is given a shrill voice. There's a fair amount of introspection in the story, but narrative drive is maintained because of Turenne's strong delivery. M.B. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2021]
