Narrator Alison Larkin brings sparkle to this engaging but little-known Christie mystery. Anne Beddingfield's desire to find adventure is realized when she witnesses a death in a 1920s London Tube station. This starts a sequence of adventures that see her on a boat to South Africa, where she finds more mystery, mayhem, and excitement. Larkin's narration captures the adventurous but slightly naïve nature of Anne, while creating a cast of characters that sound authentic to the period. In particular, Larkin's portrayal of Sir Eustace is ideal, presenting a blustering and amusingly short-tempered upper-class Englishman. The result is a delightful listen, and while some of the language may sound dated to the contemporary ear, it is very much of its time.
