With this "fly-on-the-wall" fictionalized account of the 1979 overthrow of the Shah of Iran, narrator Stefan Rudnicki wisely avoids melodramatics in favor of a crisp, intimate delivery. At times, he sounds like the authorized voice for confidential CIA communications, which may be the case, considering that the author spent 27 years in the Foreign Service. Rudnicki makes smart choices because no matter how much fiction is injected into this story, it's hard to sell it as a thriller when its ending is so widely known. Instead, the momentum of history, well-crafted language, and an authoritative delivery carry the listener to the finish line. R.W.S. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2021]
