FINDING HOME

Narrator Benjamin Fife presents the horrors many Blacks suffered in the American South in the early twentieth century. Listeners meet John "Pie" Chambless, who flees his Alabama home at age 16 after killing two Klansmen in self-defense. Fife believably renders Pie's good points; he's loyal, he enjoys pie--hence, his nickname, and he's mostly a good father to his six daughters. Fife also presents his secretive and hot-tempered side, and his love of booze and gambling. Life on the run takes him to Louisiana, where he meets grandmotherly Irene, who shares her tent in a hobo camp. It's heartbreaking and exhilarating when, years later, his daughters find his biological family.
