Fatma is one of only a handful of women members of the ministry, and El-Attar adroitly depicts her internal struggle after unexpectedly being assigned another female agent as a partner. Fatma has always worked alone, and El-Attar's slow and subtle shift of Fatma's attitude from one of resentment to rapport is impeccable. El-Attar expertly creates a vibrant version of Cairo that captures a heady blend of the cosmopolitan and the supernatural that will win many new fans.
