THE COST OF KNOWING

Narrator Kevin R. Free captures the heart and mind of 16-year-old Alex Rufus, who is suffering in ways most teens can't imagine. Since his parents' death, he can touch objects and see people's futures. Free sensitively depicts Alex's experiences and growing anxiety. He envisions breaking up with his girlfriend, then, worse, views the imminent death of his 12-year-old brother, Isaiah. Alex regrets their lack of connection, especially when he learns that Isaiah has the psychic gift of seeing the past. Free's authentic-sounding tone grounds the story's fantasy elements as the Black teen recounts the horrors of growing up in a white neighborhood, where racism is insidious and dangerous.
