Georgia Medical Examiner Sara Linton is visiting her former husband, Grant County Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, at the station house when two thugs arrive with guns blazing. They kill several cops and create a hostage situation. Deborah Hazlett provides a masterful narration of this complex novel, keeping the action taut as Sara pries open the simmering hatreds and generations-old secrets behind the carnage. With a Southern twang, Hazlett enlivens characters named Hoss, Spot, and Possum, deftly avoiding stereotypes and bringing the consequences of an indelible past into present-day reality.
