In 1948, a group of European refugees, among them 9-year-old Armstrong and her parents, left Marseilles for new lives in Australia or New Zealand. The trip was long, monotonous, and hot, and, upon arrival, the welcome for each traveler varied. Now Armstrong has recreated the journey and tracked down as many survivors as she could. It's a long story, mostly narrative, but Deidre Rubenstein's energetic reading keeps it moving. She gives each word its due and enlivens conversations and life stories, many of them harrowing. The voyage of the DERNA and her passengers may be an unfamiliar tale to most but consider this audio a great opportunity to learn. J.B.G.
