In 2016, investigative reporter Arnie Rednapp is challenged to uncover the truth behind a socialite's family background. He pieces together the story from interviews with people he meets while traveling up the Klamath River and from letters written by a young widow in 1899. Author W.E. Roberts narrates the contemporary part of the story, with Laurel Lefkow voicing the letters written in the past. John Chancer reads a letter at the end of the audiobook that confirms the author's assumptions. The use of the two main narrators helps to anchor the different parts of the story in the relevant era. The narrators are well matched, with Roberts's rich tones and gifted characterizations balanced by Lefkow's lighter tone. The result is an enjoyable and thought-provoking listen.
