A JOURNAL OF RAMBLINGS THROUGH THE HIGH SIERRAS OF CALIFORNIA

by | Read by Jack de Golia

Classics • 4.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1875

Narrator Jack de Golia gives a fine and fitting performance of this 1870 excursion in the High Sierras. He narrates with a storyteller's pace and tone and captures both the author's scientific enthusiasm and sense of wonder at the "indescribable grandeur." Professor Le Conte traveled over five weeks with nine other folks from the newly founded University of California at Berkeley. Their horseback mountaineering was often interrupted by cold weather, injured animals, and challenging trails in the vast country from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe. Naturalist John Muir briefly joined them. Le Conte's entries are often punctuated by short scientific lectures as well as lively reports on mountain camping, bread making, swimming, and riding. This brief audiobook leaves the listener with a sense of wonder at that awesome space. A.D.M. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2021]
