Emily Spurr's debut novel grabs your heart and doesn't let go. Narrator Zenia Starr is the believable voice of 10-year-old Rae as, over 55 days, she carries on a one-sided conversation with her missing mom. She is matter-of-fact as she recounts the events of her days; compassionate as she comes to the rescue of her elderly neighbor, Lettie; and understanding, yet sometimes impatient, with young Oscar, who's looking for a friend. Starr adds nuance to Lettie's voice as she goes from a grumpy, isolated hoarder to a supportive, dependable friend. Young Oscar is a breath of fresh air and humor as he chips away at Rae's defenses to make a friend. This hopeful story is a testament to the power of empathy. N.E.M.
