When narrator Matt Godfrey portrays a hit man saying, "I am going to kill you," there's gravelly menace in his voice. He's also convincing as Mace Reid, a handler of cadaver dogs, a guy who feels "a shiv in the guts " when a song reminds him of the wife that got away. Godfrey has extraordinary range, but more essential is his agility as he leads us through a maze of plots, subplots, and sub-subplots. A thriller needs villains, and this audiobook has a full set. Fortunately for both the world we live in and the plot, the Windy City has its heroes, too. Two-footed heroes, of course, like you and me, but also those aforementioned cadaver dogs.
