The author looks at the history of baseball broadcasting decade by decade from its origins 100 years ago to the present. Barry Abrams offers his usual animated narration of colorful anecdotes and vignettes. Abrams does slight vocal imitations along the way--and if ever there were a bunch of subjects who call for their voices to be parroted, it's this bunch. Their voices are what made them. Abrams doesn't go over the top; he just shapes the story creatively as the listener hears about announcers Red Barber, Harry Caray, Ernie Harwell, and others. Abrams knows the subjects, too--from Southern lilts to more bombastic tones. An enjoyable listen that doesn't get bogged down in technology but focuses on the announcers themselves.
