Truman's mysteries always have interesting settings and plots. Here the infamous Watergate complex is the scene of two murders, both connected to upcoming elections in Mexico. In the thick of things are Truman's power couple, lawyer Mac Smith and his art dealer wife, who reluctantly become embroiled in politics via their friend Vice President Joe Aprile. Richard Poe has read several of Truman's works, so it's no surprise that he's comfortable portraying the Smiths and the political intrigue, glitzy social events, and violent death they encounter. Here he demonstrates agility in shifting between gringo and Latin accents. He's particularly adept at the menacing Mexican villains in the story. Each chapter begins with a scene and/or time setting, accentuated with pauses by Poe. Another well-read and thoroughly entertaining Capital Crime.
