Lacey reads his compendium of stories from English history, 7150 BC to 1381 AD, with charm and humor, in a voice immediately likable. Many stories will be familiar--some are real chestnuts. But Lacey finds little-known facts to give them new interest or sheds new light on legends, and his versions are interesting and winning. Despite their brevity and episodic nature, overall they convey a sense of the sweep of history and develop a picture of the nation over time. The recorded version lacks the book's supplementary material (maps, sources, etc.), but since this is storytelling more than history writing, the medium fits the book perfectly. Listeners will look forward to the promised future volumes. W.M. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine [Published: APR/MAY 05]
