Playing with magic, restoring the souls of heroes long dead, and creating beasts that are part animal, part human can have unexpected consequences. But war is almost certainly foreseeable and likely inevitable. New and shifting alliances are formed and then unraveled, and fate plays a prominent role as forces converge upon the impending confrontation. Christopher Kay is an agile narrator who creates distinct voices for the many major characters, whether human or beast. He draws out the complexities of the characters and plot and moves smoothly between the various threads of the story.
