Lawrence in a theatrical tone and an English accent, bringing the writer's personality to life in this unique twist on historical fiction. The story alternates between Lawrence's perspective in 1928 as he finishes the novel and the obscenity trial in 1960, when publishers work to bring the book in its original form to readers. Jackie Kennedy attended the trial, drawing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's attention. The breathy tone used for Jackie contrasts with the shouts of "Objection!" during the tense courtroom scenes.
