Natalie Warren and her best friend canoe 2,000 miles from Minnesota to Hudson Bay right after graduating from college, becoming the first women to do so. Warren narrates the journey with authenticity and a seriousness of purpose but also a sarcastic smirk and a knowing wink. Her finest moments are during hairy situations involving flooded rivers, curious black bears, skeptical men, and snake nests. Even the closest of friends in such close quarters will get cranky with each other; after getting to the point of having to write each other notes, the pair find equilibrium and become even closer. Warren's pacing can be a bit slow at times, and the listener might wish for a slighter faster paddle, but her voice is appealing, and her earnestness and sense of wonder are infectious.
