Narrator Marni Penning has an opportunity to explore characters of multiple generations in this debut space opera. The setting is a space station that is cut off from the rest of the galaxy in which a rigid caste system has developed. Penning captures the desperate mood of the lowest caste, as well as the regime that represses even the more privileged classes. Dr. Shae, niece of the leader of the station, is captured and sees firsthand that the government doesn't treat all people equally. Penning is adept at depicting the complexity of the characters and the relationships that grow and change among various groups. The pace is quick, and the dialogue crisp.
