MASON & DIXON

by | Read by Steven Crossley

Fiction • 34 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1997

Like Pynchon's novels, this audiobook is about almost everything, including astronomy, slavery, surveying, Chinese geomancy, electric eels, American Revolutionary politics, and longitude. You can well imagine how many characters are involved in telling the story of the two men who gave their names to our most famous border. They are mostly distinguished by tone, accent, and intonation, although all the Americans, no matter where in America they were raised, have the same accent. Still, as the story ranges from various English regions to Capetown, St. Helena, and the U.S., Crossley keeps listeners oriented in the narrative and its geography. He is also skilled with the many shifts of mood, especially in the complex relationship between Mason and Dixon. D.M.H. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2022]
