THE FALCONER

Reader Susan Anspach becomes India Blake, the protagonist of McCarthy's poignant, powerful and lyric first novel about a woman who chooses to savor her last six months of life by carrying out her dream--falconry--which, in turn, leads her to find her one true love. Anspach performs so smoothly that there's no trace of her reading; it seems as though she is sharing her most intimate thoughts and feelings. Pauses and emotional sighs may seem melodramatic at times, but overall, they add to the effect of India talking directly to the listener. Music is used for dramatic effect, soaring and hopeful at the finale. Anspach impressively performs the story and effectively conveys the author's message.
