A multitude of characters real and imagined, along with assorted settings, makes this story somewhat difficult to follow. Listeners may want to start with its prequel, THE CLAY GIRL. Still, Laura Kyswaty's narration is lively, and she makes 17-year-old Ari intriguing enough to entice listeners to continue. In particular, Kyswaty captures Ari's resilience. She has survived her mother's addiction and her father's abuse, and now she's determined to grow past her trauma. But it only increases with the murder of a friend. Nonetheless, Kyswaty highlights Ari's growth and her determination to aid those who suffer from abusive families. S.W. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2022]
