Speaking in a world-weary tone, Jonathan Davis reads Kelton's classic, fast-paced Western, based on a family feud. Davis adroitly plays Texas Rangers Andy Pickard, Farley Brackett, and Rusty Shannon, as well as prisoner Jayce Landon. While Davis tells the story without a Texas drawl, he still manages to enhance the tension and drama of the plot twists and gunfights. Well-developed characters and the tensions of family relationships are highlighted. Romance, of course, blooms between Bethel Brackett and Andy, and Davis strives for expressive, believable female voices for her and other members of the Landon and Hopper families. Davis's pacing helps the story unfold naturally in its action and dialogue. S.C.A. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine [Published: FEB/ MAR 06]
