Unfolding in the early years of the last century, the plot of this audiobook transports listeners to Iceland, and the destination is as interesting as one might expect. Karitas is a young woman who shares her rather desperate coming-of-age experiences; her dreams are focused on one day becoming an artist. Anita Briem offers a decent performance. Her pace is somewhat uneven and often too brisk, especially as listeners try to discern one character from another. Sometimes that pace is accompanied by a lack of clarity, as well, with enunciation becoming imprecise or volume suddenly dropping too low. The story develops slowly, so dedicated listeners will have no trouble following along--it's just a matter of how patient those listeners are.
