This fictionalized biography begins when the widowed Mary is 18 years old and has returned to Scotland after living in France for years; it ends with her death. While it is filled with political intrigue, royal plots and violence, there are also some light and humorous moments. Karpf manages to deliver a dramatic, spirited performance, which is laced with humor. She successfully keeps track of all the characters' voices, with very occasional slips. Scots, British, French and Italian accents roll off her tongue effortlessly, and the men's voices are so convincing that, at times, it sounds as if there are two different people reading. This thoroughly enjoyable listening experience gives the listener a peek into a volatile period in English history. S.S.R. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 00]
