A look at the unification of Italy during the nineteenth century is an intriguing story that involves Italian political leaders and Vatican officials. Alan Sklar has a deep, serious voice, and he reads at an excellent pace. Sklar never stumbles on the various Italian and other European names, and he presents intrigue believably. Those unfamiliar with events in Italy at this time will be surprised by the tension between the Vatican and Italian nationalists.
