In this slow-burn romance, narrator Tom Picasso imbues the Dutch protagonist, Tycho, with the reserved, cautious tone of a young adult who is struggling with his identity. Hoping to find direction in his life, Tycho comes to the U.S. to become a counselor at an international camp in Tennessee, where he meets Oliver, a young Norwegian with a deep but soft voice that belies confidence. While much of the audiobook consists of Tycho's third-person musings on his thoughts and feelings, Picasso's pronunciation of foreign phrases during dialogue is accurate. However, Picasso settles for varying the tones of international characters' voices rather than attempting a range of accents, thereby giving the audio experience of this otherwise tender, absorbing novel a sense of unrealized potential.
