Author/narrator Louisa Lim does a splendid job delivering the history of Hong Kong from before the British takeover in the 1840s to the present. Lim, who grew up there, presents a city that is its own self--Chinese, but not of the mainland, with a strong British influence. Lim's native language is Chinese; while speaking English, she has a distinct accent that sounds Anglo-Australian. An experienced broadcaster, her enunciation is precise, and her pace deliberate. The audiobook is more of a report than a narrative, and Lim's performance reflects that approach. All of this is fascinating and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.
