Sibell Delahunty, a young British woman, becomes orphaned in a tragic sea accident during a voyage to Australia with her parents in the l870's. This novel by popular Australian author Patricia Shaw relates the story of Sibell's struggle to create a new life in a strange land. Narrator Joy Mitchell introduces us to an array of individual personalities and situations as Sibell confronts them. She strengthens this colonial portrait with various accents. Her voice is temperate and unhurried, attending to illustrating the cultural diversity of the city, the outback and a country adjusting to change.
