Amanda Quick once again sets her story in Regency England, where Caroline Fordyce, who writes sensational novels and has a dark secret in her past, confronts Andrew Hardesty, who is investigating the murder of a spiritual medium. Anne Flosnik voices the story in a style that suits the period and the prose, and she characterizes both Caroline and Andrew with elegance, as well as perfectly pitched emotions. The strength and skill of her narration help to overcome some dramatic weaknesses--namely, an absence of the romantic obstacles that usually provide suspense in Quick’s novels. Overall though, this is superbly read and hard to turn off. M.A.M. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 05]
