Mack Sanderson's timbre is reminiscent of the classic broadcasters' voices--mellow and richly masculine, with a pleasing rumble in the lower registers. As the author recounts how cutting-edge modern art came to America, Sanderson's voice glides over behind-the-scenes narrative that features many familiar and many more unfamiliar names. Picasso and other modernists were slow to catch on in the U.S. but were nourished by a small circle of collectors, dealers, and gallery owners. Some listeners may balk at Sanderson's choice to give character voices to historical figures, a feature that results here, as often happens, in caricature. But this group history proves highly listenable, as well as insightful--a window into the aesthetic and commercial sides of high art that reveals the two to be inseparable.
