Pennington’s primary goal is to instruct listeners in the subtle Christian meditation of centering prayer, but he also does much more. The author also answers questions about how contemplative prayer relates to other forms of Christian worship and how centering prayer relates to Eastern meditative practices. Given these many goals, it’s no surprise that David L. Abbot’s narration must shift in tone and pace throughout his delivery. He is most successful when giving methodical guidance in prayer itself and least successful when trying to convey Pennington’s distinctions among doctrines. Then his voice lacks the edge the text calls for. G.T.B. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 05]
