Megan Kat O'Malley, granted nine lives by her mother over four hundred years ago, now lives, or rather hides, from the world in a mirage in the desert with 50 very communicative cats. When Angelo, also a nine-lived cat and her brother in her first life, appears, he teaches her to live in the world again. Throughout this magical tale, which teaches tolerance and understanding of people "not like everyone else," Hollenberg brings the cats and their human siblings to life. All the telepathic communications are slightly distant voices creatively spliced into conversation. Dexter's anthropomorphic world is highly visual, forming through Hollenberg's mellifluous intonations and transporting the listener from this world into Kat's.
