A SLIGHT TRICK OF THE MIND

Between them, Simon Jones and Mitch Cullin have convinced me that Sherlock Holmes is a real person. And a very interesting real person at that. The Sherlock Holmes in this story is not so much a great detective as an exceedingly old intellectual whose passion for research is not dimmed by his increasingly faulty memory. He’s an aloof man who rediscovers his heart in an unlikely friendship with his housekeeper’s young son. Jones gives believable voice to a 93-year-old man, a 12-year-old boy, a rural housekeeper, and a Japanese businessman. It’s a remarkable understated performance that is tied together by his beautifully paced narration. It honors the reflective, almost nostalgic tone without being too measured. A book to savor. A.C.S.
