This is the second in a trilogy about the women who inhabit Eden, an exquisite Jamaican plantation. Young misfit Sophie returns to Jamaica from England in 1903 to find Eden, her family's estate, near ruin. Furthermore, her heart is inextricably drawn to Ben, her childhood love who is below her in station. Few surprises await in this romantic period piece except for the fine narration by Anna Bentinck. She reads with considerable skill, making the most out of the drama and investing the characters with dimension. More significantly, she contributes a sincerity so palpably intense as to elevate the story she tells with a significance the raw text does not possess.
