STAR STRUCK

Against her better judgment but driven by financial need, Private Investigator Kate Brannigan agrees to play bodyguard to the longtime star of a popular soap opera who has been getting death threats. Accompanying her to the set and to public appearances provides plenty of challenges, and when the astrologer to the stars of the soap is murdered, Kate and her client come under police scrutiny. Laura Brattan makes extensive use of varying accents and tone to differentiate a broad cast of characters. She draws out the dry wit of Brannigan and her quirky employees and friends. Brattan’s quick pace contrasts effectively with the beginnings of each chapter, which she introduces quietly with excerpts from a book by the murdered astrologer.
