This prize-winning work examines post-colonial Rhodesia as it becomes the independent nation of Zimbabwe. Through the lives of two sisters, we see a world brutalized by the violence of civil strife. THE STONE VIRGINS is an African tragedy, boldly written by an African social critic and hauntingly narrated by an African woman. The level of authenticity Danai Gurira brings to the work is both palpable and spiritual. With a delivery that seems initially to be a monotone, she soon mesmerizes us with a culturally nuanced performance. Not only do her pronunciations ring true, her slow cadence transports the listener to another world. This is storytelling at its best; it is truly spellbinding.
