This largely autobiographical audiobook is a coming-of-age story set in South Korea in the mid-seventies. It follows the life of Insu, son of an American G.I. and a Korean mother. Narrator Nick Martineau's youthful, energetic voice lends authenticity to the portrayal of Insu and his teenaged friends. Martineau pronounces the Korean place names and personal names without hesitation and convinces the listener that the events portrayed—many shocking or at least unfamiliar—really happened. As the story flashes back to the Korean War in the fifties, listeners become aware of how South Korea remains impacted by the brutality of that time. The novel is filled with Korean myths, superstitions, Buddhist teachings, and clashes between old and new, East and West. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2023]
