These days Lincoln is rarely looked upon as a politician, but this well-researched and engrossing history of the 1860 Republican convention in Chicago shows a side of him that's strikingly human, and more approachable than the usual iconography. Narrator Adam Barr recounts this story with ease, clarity, and conviction. His voice is pleasing and easily listenable over many hours. His plain delivery is especially effective for history and nonfiction because it maintains the listener's focus and attention throughout. Where Barr falls down is in his delivery of historical voices, which prove indistinguishable and interchangeable. His Lincoln voice is particularly egregious, making a rural caricature out of complex, highly principled, often conflicted man. D.A.W. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2023]
