An ensemble of narrators voices the works of Black poets who are lesser known in the canon of Black literature from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Tracy K. Smith begins the audiobook with a strong, clear delivery of the foreword, followed by Jesse McCarthy and Joshua Bennett, who share the introduction. When we enter the worlds of the poets, the deliveries are varied in tempo, tone, rhythm, and pitch. Patrick Sylvain's steady, accented tone when delivering Fenton Johnson's poetry contrasts with Imani Davis's energetic narration of Henrietta Cordelia Ray's poems.
