Masquapaug teen Anequs renews her people's lost relationship with Nampeshiweisit (dragoneers) and Nampeshiwe (dragons) when she bonds with an egg discovered near her island. Narrating from Anequs's perspective, Charley Flyte has a self-assured tone that matches the Indigenous teen's commitment to her cultural knowledge and traditions as she begins her studies at the mainland dragon school. Flyte's characterizations of students, professors, and citizenry create a chorus of anger and fear that is aimed at Anequs and other Indigenous residents. As tension builds, she faces challenges with friends, including Theod, a self-loathing Naquipaug teen; Sander, a quietly intelligent boy of privilege; and Liberty, an indentured maid at the school--all capably voiced.
