Richard Poe becomes a logical-minded Vulcan in this opening of Schwartz and Sherman's three-part epic about the history and anthropology of Vulcans and Romulans. One can almost hear echoes of Spock in Poe's reading as the narrative switches, chapter-by-chapter, between the late 24th century, when Spock helps orchestrate an alliance between Romulans, Klingons, Vulcans, and Humans, and two thousand years earlier in Vulcan history, when the hero Surak first led Vulcan into an era of logic. As a diplomatic meeting is threatened, Spock reaches into the ancient memories of Surak to find the truth.
