This often dreary account of Rome's unending campaigns, both political and military, springs to life only when the dying dictator, Sulla, and the young Julius Caesar are on hand. Nevertheless, Donada Peters handles the material valiantly. Her pacing is superb, and her interpretations of the multitude of less well-developed characters are enthusiastic.
