R.L. Stine's Rotten School series offers thin plots and anything-goes humor aimed at keeping the jittery attention of boys-who-don't-want-to read. Stine pulls out all the stops for this audience, with mean tricks and crass jokes galore. Narrator Michael McKean is a good reader with nowhere to turn: There's nothing for him to do but invest this bunch of unlikable characters with exaggerated, unpleasant voices. Listening to McKean create these characters, one wonders whom we are to identify with. Not know-it-all Bernie or the other mean students who torture and tattle on each other, or the strange teachers and staff. Sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover--rotten is right!
