Submarines at war make for good reading, and author Fullerton drew upon his experience as a British naval officer during WWII to create this story of excitement and romance. His nautical lingo adds a lot, but an overdose of adjectives weakens the spell he seeks to create. British narrator Terry Wale rasps as though he has smoked a lot, making his voice rattle in low tones for every character. He inflects and varies his tone to pleasing effect, giving the story an entertaining extra. Too bad his stuffy aristocratic accent makes all the Italian, Spanish, and British characters sound as if they were educated at Oxford.
