THE SUN AND THE VOID

Natalia Castellanos narrates a high fantasy inspired by the history and mythology of Venezuela. Reina, the granddaughter of a sorceress, is violently attacked on her journey to visit her grandmother. Once she arrives, she becomes embroiled in a plot to harness the powers of a god. Reina is deeply conflicted about what is required of her, and Castellanos captures her grief, uncertainty, and anger. Castellanos also highlights the unexpected moments of confidence and joy Reina experiences, making them all the more precious. A secondary plot involving Eva Kesaré, another young woman who is on a journey of self-discovery, allows Castellanos to plumb many more emotional depths.The cast of characters is enormous, and as Castellanos creates several memorable characters, the sheer scope required of her is daunting.
