SMITHSONIAN LEGENDARY PERFORMERS Dashiell Hammett

This compilation of 11 radio programs based on Hammett material offers complete shows (often with ads), excellent sound reproduction, and fine actors, among them William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Humphrey Bogart. It’s interesting to hear alternate performances of THE MALTESE FALCON, especially from Mary Astor, who is more emotionally compelling than in the film version. But these radio originals from the ‘40s and ’50s are dated. The idea of period ads is amusing--the reality, labored and painful. Without the ability to generate nostalgia or historical interest, it’s hard to imagine this program entertaining a modern listener.
