Gene Engene makes the story of a mountain man called "bear," Like the fugitive, and Frederica come alive. Fans of the Pacific Northwest will enjoy this chance to go back to a time when the Cascade Mountains were virtually unexplored and traversed only by vague trails, the Wild West of early mining days. Engene's vocal characterizations are dramatic and individualistic. The description of Bear cutting off Luke's frost-bitten fingers is intensified by the tone of the reading, and the intoxicated voices are terrifically well done.
